The Deployment Committee’s goal is to establish a deployment test-bed in Denver, Colorado to demonstrate sustainable 5.9GHz DSRC-based, connected V2V and V2I mobility and safety applications. The reason for the effort is to advance 5.9GHz DSRC and give the operator community a way to experience the technology first hand. This effort leverages interest and previous work by OmniAir members to include Northwest Parkway LLC, E-470 Public Highway Authority; Kapsch USA, Sirit, and Booz Allen Hamilton. The scope includes technical demonstrations of safety, mobility and environmental applications, but a critical element is also to show financial viability of an OmniAir deployment approach called Tactical Deployment. This suggests that connected vehicle technologies – 5.9GHz DSRC and others – can be deployed cooperatively and in a financially sustainable way.
Even with significant member contributions, additional resources are needed for this project. As such, the committee developed a proposal and is seeking funding. The committee posits that this demonstration will:
| The Deployment Committee initiative will see 5.9GHz DSRC – a technology funded by USDOT since 2001 – proven in a metropolitan environment. It will ‘stress test’ whether connected vehicle deployments require long-term public support (OmniAir believes they do not). Finally, the Deployment Committee initiative will develop and fine-tune a model for deployment that can be replicated, resulting in a national implementation of DSRC systems that significantly improve the safety and mobility of our transportation systems. | ![]() |
