OmniAir EPSNIS in Brief

The EPSNIS is a set of interface control documents (ICDs) that control a financial transaction across a specific network – in this context a network is bounded by the POS (a place a driver uses her device-enabled vehicle to pay for a roadside service) and the Issuer of the payment account (a financial services entity).  See the diagram to the right.   In between sits the clearing house/clearing corporation.  They service Issuers and the POS community and offer the EPSNIS as an alternative to existing, often closed payment ICD protocols.  Ideally, the operator community (first and foremost, toll road operators) takes the first step by specifying the OMNAIR EPSNIS in an RFP.  A CC – licensed to use the EPSNIS – would offer it, as would other licensed CCs.  The EPSNIS, because it is an open standard, provides the basis for competition, innovation and lower pricing.  To ensure compliance to the EPSNIS standard and to assure interoperability across multiple services and clearing corporations – the CC would be subject to an OmniAir EPSNIS compliance certification program.
